I’m getting very excited about this whole “I have a blog” thing. I’m developing a plan for the types of posts I’d like to write, and I’d love your input.

Here’s my idea: I’ll be writing 5 primary sorts of entries:

1) G2G Profile: Garbage-to-goods company profile

2) Green research piece: Green expert interview and opinion/subject area research piece

3) Sustainable San Francisco: A focus on San Francisco with local tips and tricks

4) Personal opinion: Miscellaneous posts based on my opinions, research, and informal conversations

5) Guest columns: Opinions, research and analysis from my friends and colleagues

A little more about each post-type

1) G2G Profile:

I think i coined a new term yesterday – Garbage-to-Goods – to describe the slice of the green economy I am most drawn to – this is where innovative product design coalesces with waste reduction and landfill diversion. I’m talking about making something useful out of someone else’s trash – saving the planet on two levels with one product – by reducing the flow to our big fat landfills, and by eliminating the need to extract or purchase virgin materials to create something new. I am a fan of McDonough’s Cradle to Cradle design principles, and I think this is somewhat distinct. Inevitably, the perfect product will employ both Garbage to Goods and Cradle to Cradle – be both made of trash and designed for reuse, not disposal. I appreciate both, but I want to really focus on product design through creative and resourceful dealings with trash. My plan is to profile a company or organization that is a leader in this new sector I’m trying to define and perhaps even speak with a founder or leader in the company to get insight into their vision and methodology.

2) Green research piece:

This type of post is exactly as it sounds – an opportunity for me to do research on a particular area of interest within sustainability and share my findings. It’s also a place where I can share what I learn from green professionals and experts I speak with and seminars and conferences I attend.

3) Sustainable San Francisco:

Sustainable San Francisco is where I get to share with you anything and everything that is green and happening in San Francisco. Some ideas for posts include:

  • What makes San Francisco so green
  • Ways the gov’t is ready to assist you in going green – aka freebies you never knew existed! (a separate post for indivisuals and businesses)
  • My favorite green networking events in the city
  • Coolest green projects you may not have heard of, such as the dump’s Artist in Residence program where artists are paid to make art from the city waste
  • What to do with your stuff when you don’t want it anymore

4) Personal opinion:

This last category is sort of a catch-all for anything else I want to write about. Some post topic ideas I have include:

  • Innovative recycling systems I’ve encountered in travels outside the country and inside
  • Best websites to find green jobs
  • Best websites and email alert services for news, focusing on enviro news
  • My favorite green products (right now its my new Sigg water bottle)

5) Guest columns:

I am constantly delighted by how many bright, inquisitive and opinionated friends and colleagues I have. I want to invite you all to consider posting on my blog. It’s a simple, low risk way to get published, get your opinion across to some small segment of the online community, and get your creative juices flowing. Please get in touch with me if you are interested.

If anyone has any suggestions about companies to profile, areas of interest within sustainability to delve into, or other blog post topics, feel free to leave me a comment with your idea.

Till next time!

Amie
